Students at Perdido School are getting into the spirit of recognizing and honoring men and women who have served, and those currently serving in our military.
November is Military Appreciation month. Students have been actively involved in a variety of activities. They began by participating in the “Gilligan’s SAM Bas Project.” The purpose of this letter writing campaign is to write letters of congratulations to Marines who would not have family members present on Graduation Day.
Interviewing WWII veterans was their next activity. The students took turns operating the video camera and interviewing veterans about their time served in the military. Through this project, students gained a deeper appreciation and respect for the sacrifices made by those who served.
History and geography facts were shared as they followed the veterans from basic training to the various duty stations through the world.
Students in grades six through eight participated in the Patriot’s Pen Essay contest for the sixth straight year. Eighth grade students Ashley Presley and Kaitlyn Ebert, finish third and second, respectively, in the contest for the state of Alabama in 2011.
A former Baldwin County student currently stationed in Afghanistan became the students’ next project, as they made Christmas cards and wrote letters that are scheduled to arrive in time for Christmas.
Students last week visited the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, where they watched the Blue Angels’ practice show, viewed the I-Max movie “Fighter Pilots”, and toured the museum. Students videoed the Blue Angels, and many of the museums aircraft in preparation for their technology fair project that traces the history of Naval Aviation and the Blue Angels, for their technology fair projects.
Perdido School were actively involved in their annual Salute to Veterans on Nov. 9, Last year, over 100 veterans plus family members enjoyed hearing about Keelser Air Force and their mission as Hurricane Hunters, described by one of the pilots.
