The 5th graders at St. Patrick Catholic School in Robertsdale (SPCS), won 1st Place in the 12th annual Coastal Kids Quiz. The Coastal Kids Quiz is an annual competition for teams of 5th graders in Mobile and Baldwin Counties, conducted by The Alabama Coastal Foundation in conjunction with The Project CATE (Conservation Action Through Education).
SPCS participants included Jonathan Doughman, Hannah Gay, Llyod LaConsay, Austin Urbin, and Mary Kate Anthony. Their 'quiz' teacher is Mrs. Kelly Cote.
Throughout the school year, the SPCS team studies materials from various sources; science book, environmental brochures, environmental websites, and environmental CDs "Ribbit's Big Splash" and "Skeeter's Big Adventure". The students learn about Alabama's rivers and streams, the environment, hurricanes, jubilees, oysters, blue crabs, shrimp, and the Gulf of Mexico. They also learn the importance of keeping our environment clean for future generations.
As winning Kids Quiz team, the SPCS 5th grade classroom was awarded $500, and each student received a trophy and $600. The students dedicated their win to 6th grader, Carlin Davis, diagnosed with with a terminal brain tumor (Pontine Glioma, D.I.P.G.).
