Orange Beach man charged with reckless murder in Mt. Vernon officer's death

Posted

Officials announced Sept. 1 that Tyler Lee Henderson, 31, of Orange Beach  has been  arrested and charged with reckless murder in connection with the death of a Mount Vernon police officer.

Officer Ivan Lopez was killed on Aug. 22 at the intersection of Highway 59 and County Road 36 in Summerdale when  a pickup that officials say was driven by Henderson ran through a stop sign at a high rate of speed. Henderson's truck slammed into Lopez's vehicle and caused an explosion, officials said during Thursday's press conference. Lopez was killed on impact.

Lopez was a former Summerdale police officer and was traveling home at the end of a shift in his police vehicle when the incident happened.

The charges filed against Henderson are murder, first-degree assault, driving with a suspended license and an ignition interlock

Lopez was the ninth Alabama law enforcement officer  to be killed  in 2022.
