ORANGE BEACH — The Alabama Point East section of Orange Beach by the Perdido Pass Bridge will be closed to the public throughout the spring break season.
Lt. Trent Johnson of the Orange Beach Police Department said that while it is not definite, the beach area will likely be closed throughout all of March and April.
“We aren’t sure yet, but we anticipate it to open back after the first weekend in May,” Johnson said.
According to a social media post made by the City of Orange Beach, the area is a popular location for spring breakers, and the decision to close was made to address safety concerns by the Orange Beach Police Department.
“We have had issues in the past with spring breakers consuming too much alcohol and jumping off the bridge into the water,” Johnson said. “Depending on the tide, that water could be very shallow. We thought it would be easier to close it and make sure everyone is safe."
All other public access beaches in Orange Beach remain open, except for the section by the Perdido Pass Bridge at Alabama Point East.
Additionally, per previous reporting the city of Orange Beach has also recently voted to ban Alcohol on the beaches during the spring break season from March 3- April 24.
