A long-standing recovery organization on the Gulf Coast is deepening its commitment to those who have worn the nation’s uniform.
Operation VETS, a specialized program of The Shoulder, delivers residential and outpatient substance use treatment along with referral and recovery support services tailored specifically for veterans. Staffed by veterans and experienced counselors, the program is designed to meet the complex needs of former service members working to rebuild their lives.
The initiative builds on The Shoulder’s more than 40-year history of providing substance use treatment, counseling and recovery support across the region. Through Operation VETS, the organization addresses challenges unique to veterans, including trauma-related experiences, co-occurring mental health conditions and obstacles that can stand in the way of long-term stability.
Leaders say the veteran-led approach helps foster trust and understanding among participants who may be navigating the lingering effects of military service while pursuing sobriety and improved mental health.
Veterans can enter the program through self-referral or by referral from courts, hospitals, employers and community partners. Services are available regardless of a person’s ability to pay, ensuring access to care for those who may face financial hardship.
