Olympic gold medal winner comes to Bounds Family YMCA June 16

TNT Swimming is hosting a competitive swimming clinic featuring three-time Olympic Gold Medal winner Rowdy Gaines. The event is open to the public and will be held at the Bounds Family YMCA in Daphne on Saturday, June 16, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Clinic registration is limited and ends June 9.

“Rowdy Gaines is one of the most recognized names in the world of competitive swimming,” said TNT Coach Jan Mittemeyer. “There were any number of Olympians available to host this clinic, but Rowdy was my first choice and we are fortunate that he accepted our invitation to come visit with us here in Daphne.”

Once known as the fastest swimmer on earth and now known as “Swimming’s greatest ambassador,” Gaines is known worldwide as a first-class swimming technician and clinician, Mittemeyer said.

“Rowdy has a great rapport with people and is fantastic with the kids,” he added. “He knows what it takes technically, mentally, and spiritually to become a champion and I’m sure that his message will be one that that anyone in attendance will never forget.”

Gaines has worked with CBS, TNT, and ESPN as a regular announcer for swimming and other events. He called his fourth Olympic telecast for NBC at the 2004 Games in Athens, Greece and will again be part of the NBC broadcast team in 2008 for the Beijing Olympics.

“Our first thought was for this event to be an in-house, TNT-only affair,” said Mittemeyer. “But, this is such a unique opportunity that we decided to share it with swimmers and families throughout the area.”

Cost for the four-hour event is $50 per person and includes an opportunity to learn champion performance techniques, from one of the nation’s foremost swim clinicians, including in-water instruction on the four competitive swimming strokes.

Swimmers will also be able to ask questions, get autographs and take photos with Gaines.

All attendees will receive a T-shirt, DVD, and other souvenirs, according to Mittemeyer.

Parents and coaches are welcome to watch the clinic at no charge.
