Officers riding to Gulf Shores for Special Olympics

GULF SHORES, Ala. - On Saturday a cadre of cops hopped on bicycles at the Alabama-Tennessee state line and headed south.

At noon Wednesday they’ll end up to the Hangout in Gulf Shores looking for lunch.

The group is traversing the state north to south to raise money for the Alabama Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

“It is through the Alabama law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics,” Gulf Shores Community Resource Officer Josh Coleman said. “They’re going to be bicycling across the state to raise funds and awareness for the 2013 Korean Games. It’s led by Deputy Rex Sorrow with the Cullman County Sheriff’s office. He’s going to be representing Alabama law enforcement for the Torch Run to the Korean Games.”

The riding officers get to town just one day prior to the group’s conference in Orange Beach on Thursday. Registration is $10 for the conference at Turquoise Place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The group raises money for Special Olympics and is also raising money to pay Sorrow’s expenses when he represents state officers and departments in Korea for the 2013 Special Olympics.

All along the bicycle route there will be stops where officers will be selling $20 T-shirts for the cause.

“You can make the whole ride or join the ride at points along the route,” Coleman said.

Gulf Shores participates in the Special Olympics through several events.

“The big one we do in Gulf Shores is the Cop on Top fundraiser at Walmart,” Coleman said.

The public is invited and T-shirts will be on sale at the Hangout on Wednesday for anyone who wants to help state law enforcement officers and their support for Special Olympics.

“They’ll have a celebration of wrapping up the ride at the Hangout,” Coleman said.
