ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — Two bits, four bit, six bits, a dollar. All for Orange Beach, stand up and holler!

Normally, this would be a cheer you would hear from the crowd, supporting their local football team. Recently, however, the tables were turned as a local football team and cheerleaders showed their support for their city.

For several weeks, members of the Orange Beach Marlins Youth Football and Cheerleading programs, along with their parents, have been selling raffle tickets for a chance to win a Big Green Egg.

The Big Green Egg, donated to the program by Jeff and Rhoda Hardy at Sand Dollar Lifestyles is the original American-designed ceramic cooker. The Egg was derived from an ancient clay cooker called a “kamado,” and has been called the most unique barbecue product on the market.

“Eggtoberfest,” a cook-off contest, is held each year at The Wharf. This year’s contest is slated for Oct. 31.

Last week, the group of proud 7- and 8-year-old athletes and cheerleaders presented the Orange Beach City Council with a check for $1,550 to help support their city.

“This year we had the football team, and we weren’t even planning on having cheerleading, but Carri Adams and her husband David stepped forward. David is the football coach and Carri promoted the cheerleaders, and Jeff and Rhoda donated the Big Green Egg for us to raffle,” Danny Martin, Orange Beach Parks Superintendent said at the Oct. 13 Orange Beach Council meeting. “The kids, the parents and other volunteers sold the raffle tickets, even selling some down at the Shrimp Festival, and they raised quite a bit of money.”

Carrie Adams conveyed the excitement of everyone involved when she, along with the football team, presented the council with the check.

“Our parents and our kids really put in a lot of effort into this,” Carrie Adams said. “Helen White, our cheerleading coach rallied the cheerleaders, and everyone really worked hard to make this successful.”

Mayor Tony Kennon expressed his appreciation to the kids and their helpers for their support.
