The North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce brought businesses, organizations, families and community members together Oct. 17 for the inaugural Dragons on the Delta Dragon Boat Race at Live Oak Landing in Stockton.
The first-of-its-kind event featured 12 teams competing in colorful dragon boats across the scenic waters of the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, a news release said. The event combined friendly competition, teamwork and entertainment while highlighting the natural beauty of North Baldwin County.
Opening ceremonies began at 8 a.m. with races continuing throughout the morning before the event concluded at 1:30 p.m.
Pepsi Atmore claimed first place overall, followed by Trip Tek Construction in second place and Terre Power in third.
"The day was Chamber-weather perfect, and we couldn't have asked for anything better," Executive Director of the North Baldwin Chamber of Commerce Kristina Pittman said in the release. "While we finished with 12 teams competing, Dragons on the Delta was about more than just a race. It was an opportunity to bring our community together in a fun and unique way while showcasing the beauty of North Baldwin County."
Pittman thanked the sponsors and volunteers whose support helped make the inaugural event possible. Sponsors included Baldwin Gulf Coast Pest Control, Quincy Compressor, Pepsi Atmore, Coastal Alabama Community College, Wind Creek and the Poarch Creek Indians, Mudbug Mafia, the City of Bay Minette and the Baldwin County Commission.
David’s Catfish of Atmore catered the VIP Pavilion, which was hosted by Prodisee Pantry. Coastal Events & Designs served as emcee for the race.
Organizers are already looking ahead to next year's event following positive feedback from participants and attendees.
"We continue to receive fantastic feedback and have already selected a date for next year's event," Pittman said. "We learned a great deal from this inaugural race and will be incorporating new ideas for 2027 that teams and spectators alike will enjoy."
The Chamber plans to build on the success of the inaugural race in 2027, with hopes of welcoming more teams, sponsors and spectators.
