In it’s first meeting of October, the Foley City Council discussed, debated and approved many resolutions, but due to the economy, were swayed towards foregoing the fireworks display to conclude Heritage Harbor Days in Nov.
The city council voted unanimously to waive the civic center fees for a Special Needs Adults Thanksgiving event on Nov. 18, a SARPC Area Agency on Aging Benefits Checkup for Seniors event on Oct. 27, the Baldwin County Watershed Coalition’s public meeting and a Southern LINC customer appreciation luncheon on Oct. 22.
The city council voted unanimously to approve a restaurant retail liquor license for Chicago Pizzeria Pub on Miflin Road and to approve a special events retail license to Katy’s Catering to sell alcohol at Heritage Harbor Days in November.
The council approved a resolution granting the request of Krewe of Les Beau Geste to hold its annual Mardi Gras parade on March 5, 2011 at noon.
At the work session, the city council considered a request from Foley High School for the school’s flowerbeds to be included with the city’s landscaping. The council decided to consider its options and determine if there is a feasible option at a later date.
A resolution entering into a medical transportation agreement with MedStar for ambulance services for inmates was approved by the city council. The agreement will also include transportation for police officers. Police Chief David Wilson said the new agreement would result in the city paying less for these services. Previously, each incidence that required medical transport was billed on an individual basis. Under the new agreement, a monthly fee of $600 will cover all transport, which is slightly more than one ambulance ride would have cost the city.
Wilson also asked that the city council consider a resolution allowing the police department to accept the Department of Justice’s Edward Byrne 2010 JAG Award, which will provide $12,595 to the police department.
A request to enclose an office area for the purchasing clerk was also approved by the city council.
The library was also authorized by the city council to continue using Baker and Taylor Books, and Baker and Taylor Entertainment as the primary supplier for books and other material for the library. The council also voted to extend a contract with Sumrall Recycling Services to handle recycling for the city and to extend a contract with Toter Incorporated for wheeled garbage containers.
Hellmich Electric’s quote for installing power for the Wilson Pecan property’s sign, fountain, light and well was also approved by the city council, and the fees for the locator sign at the property were waived to all but minimum fees.
The council also approved the purchase of LED lights for new trellises in the downtown area, and decided to dispose of a printer that no longer functions.
The council voted to reappoint David Horton to the planning commission, Carolyne Hollis to the beautification board and reappoint David Rauch to the building authority, library authority, park and recreation authority and the redevelopment authority.
Public hearings were also set to consider the planning commission’s recommendations to zone five parcels of property near the Foley Beach Express. A public hearing was also set to consider violations to the city’s grass and weed abatement.
