DAPHNE, Ala. – The second-ranked Daphne Trojans exploded for 28 points in the second half and kept Wetumpka's high-powered offense off the scoreboard with a 37-0 shutout win over the Indians on Friday in a 6A quarterfinal game.
Tyrell Holloway carried 17 times for 176 yards and two touchdowns and T.J. Yeldon rushed 13 times for 112 yards and a touchdown and had a 68-yard touchdown reception in the win.
The Trojans (13-0) advanced to host Davidson in the semifinals next Friday for a chance to play in the 6A state championship game.
"Obviously we did some good things on offense," Daphne coach Glenn Vickery said. "Our offensive line was down two starters and we were trying to hide that. Those guys stepped in and played, Matthew Mabury was one of them and Hunter Broadus came back from injury and played. What a great effort by our offensive line to give us a chance to make some big plays on offense. It was a great night."
Wetumpka (10-2) had averaged more than 30 points per game before being shut out on Friday. Roderick Tate picked off Wetumpka quarterback Jamal Golden in the end zone and returned it 25 yards in the third quarter, and Trey Jenkins returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown in the fourth.
"Our defensive guys, our coaches, they work all the time," Vickery said. "Coach (Bart) Sessions, coach (Lawrence) Yelding and coach (Rick) Andrew put a great package together and our kids executed the package. We never in a million years thought we would shut them out. We knew they would get some yardage. What a great night for our defense."
Daphne led 9-0 at halftime on a 37-yard field goal by Brandon Roberts and a 68-yard touchdown pass from Russ Mosley to Yeldon. The Trojans opened the second half with a five-play, 66-yard touchdown drive capped by Yeldon's 40-yard score on 4th and one. Tate's interception set up a four-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 60-yard touchdown run from Holloway. Holloway's second score came on a 49-yard run on Daphne's next possession.
Israel Lamprakes added 80 yards on 12 carries, and Mosley completed 6 of 10 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown.
