DAPHNE, Alabama — Daphne High held a signing ceremony for nine student athletes in Trojan Hall May 1. Five from soccer, two from football, one runner and one basketball player signed.
“It’s always a testament to the hard work of a lot of people when we get together like this,” said DHS athletic director Glenn Vickery. “It’s not just about the athlete although, that’s who we recognize most today for their achievements both on and off the field. But it really takes a community of parents, teachers, administrators, coaches as well as the kids who are going on to the next level. It took a lot of hard work on their part, of course, in the classroom and in their sports, but they should know they couldn’t have done it completely on their own and I think everybody here today understands and appreciates that.”
BASKETBALL: Forward Kirsten Henton signed her letter of intent with Bishop State Community College’s Wildcats of Mobile. The three-year all-county wing and post player was the Lady Trojans leading rebounder and team captain her senior season.
CROSS COUNTRY: Distance runner Alex Guillory will run for the University of Mobile Rams in the fall. He was named All County for three years in cross country and All-Region Team-3 the last two seasons. He claimed the 3.1 mile championship as the overall winner of the prestigious 2012 Mobile XC Challenge of Champions, Open division, at Langan Park. He also took third in the Baldwin County CC Championship last fall.
SOCCER: Will Carpenter lettered four years at goal keeper for DHS and will play Division I NCAA soccer for the University of Alabama Huntsville Chargers. A team captain, he was named All-State 2012, AHSAA South All-Star Captain in 2011 and All Baldwin County four years. Carpenter missed only three starts due to injury in his four-year varsity career.
Tyler Cook signed with the Mississippi College Choctaws. He lettered two years at sweeper for the Trojans, named team Co-Captain 2013, AHSAA South All-Star 2012, All County 2012 and was the Defensive MVP award recipient of the 2013 Mobile-Baldwin Metro Tournament. Cook also lettered in football and was named All County Football for 2012.
Tyler Cox signed to play for Huntingdon College’s Hawks. An Honors Student and three year soccer letterman, the defensive forward posted 17 career goals with 20 career assists for the Trojans.
Josh Gurvitz will join the University of West Alabama Soccer Tigers this fall. The center mid fielder lettered for four years and now holds the Daphne High School record for assists. He was named an All State Honorable Mention as a junior, twice named All-Baldwin County and was named to the Mobile-Baldwin Metro All-Tournament Team this spring.
Sam Seawell signed with The University of the South’s Tigers of Sewanee, Tenn. A three-year letterman, Seawell overcame a serious injury to return to the sport at a highly competitive level. A team Co-Captain for 2013, the IB (International Baccalaureate) Student was also named to the Mobile-Baldwin Metro All-Tournament Team for 2013.
FOOTBALL: Football players Robert Alexander and Chris Sain were unable to attend the formal signing but have also signed letters of intent.
An offensive lineman, Alexander will join Iowa Central Community College’s Tritons this summer in Fort Dodge, Iowa. A member of the 2010 state championship team, he was a three-year starter and named All Baldwin County two years.
Wide Receiver Chris Sain was also a big part of the 2010 state title team. The three-year starter will play for the Blue Dragons of Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. Sain was also an All Region Honorable Mention in 2012. He also lettered in basketball for the Trojans.
