FAIRHOPE — Extra, extra "Newsies Jr." is in town!

The Eastern Shore Repertory Theatre is staging "Newsies Jr." this weekend at the Fairhope Civic Center.

The Alan Menken and Jack Feldman musical is a 60-minute version of the 2012 Broadway show that was based on the 1992 Disney film.

It tells the story of newsboys in New York City at the turn of the 20th century who strike against unfair conditions the children face when newspaper publishers raise prices at the newsboys' expense.

ESRT produced the full-length musical several years ago as one of the group's wildly popular Theater on the Bluff productions.

The theatre troupe was only the second in Alabama to perform the full-length version of the show. This weekend's production is a lighter adaptation that allows for the inclusion of students as young as third grade to be involved.

More than 80 children from across Baldwin County fill the roles of newsies, newpaper publishers and politicians.

The older more experienced cast members, roughly 40 students, performed the show in New York City's Central Park in early October. While there the cast members also learned the history of the newsies through tours to the places where the real newsies lived and worked and attended master classes and workshops.

The show is directed by Erin Langley with choreography by Matthew Kiel.
