Robertsdale High’s new head football coach and athletic director will be introduced, and perhaps unveiled, to the student body and community at a special open house pep rally the evening of Jan. 26.
What makes this pep rally so different is that the parents and friends of the students will be able to join in and cheer for their respective classes as they vie for the school’s Spirit Stick.
“After the pep rally and introduction of the new AD and head football coach, the students will be able to introduce their parents and friends to myself, as well as members of the faculty and staff,” said RHS Principal Craig Ross. “Meeting members of the community, as well as the parents of our students, is something all of us are looking forward to.”
The night-time pep rally will enable members of the community to come out and not only meet various school officials, but they can find out what all is happening on the RHS campus; ranging from athletics, to clubs, and academics.
“We want to put our best foot forward that night,” Ross said, “as we want our community to be proud of us and the students’ accomplishments. We are doing a lot here at RHS, so this is an opportunity for us to show off a bit.”
Former Senator Albert Lipscomb, who now works with the Baldwin County Board of Registrars, said the Board would be conducting a voter registration sometime in February.
“I talked with Mr. Ross and he was thinking along the lines of a senior assembly where we could talk for a few minutes about the privilege of voting, public services, and how important it is to cast your ballot in a free democracy,” Lipscomb said. “We would then register those seniors who have turned 18, and would care to vote in the Alabama Primary on March 13. Since this year is a presidential election this makes their first voting experience one to remember.”
A runoff, if needed would be held April 24, with the general election for president being held on Nov. 6, which is the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November as the law states.
Last Friday was the last day for one of RHS’s counselors, Julie Thomasson, who transferred to Spanish Fort High School. The transfer may cut 20 minutes from her drive to and from work, but Robertsdale’s students and cross-country team will be losing a good friend and coach.
Thomasson always did her best for her students, especially as she counseled them in regards to college, a trade school, or even a career in the military.
Thomasson was honored with a tea during last Tuesday’s faculty meeting.
An RHS spirit shirt contest is currently underway through Jan. 31.
Cathy Danner, and Kelly McCrady, the Robertsdale High librarians, said the entries should be both creative and appropriate to wear to school. The T-shirts will be for the entire student body to purchase.
Prom tickets to the Robertsdale High Prom, which will be held April 14, are now on sale for $20. The formal event will take place at the Baldwin County Coliseum.
Tickets are now being sold in the RHS Library before and during school. For those who wish to save money it’s recommended that they purchase their tickets by Feb. 17; even if they don’t already have a date.
Should they wait past the17th the price goes up a step to $30 per ticket. A few weeks later it goes to $40.
Prom can be expensive as it is with the purchase of gowns, shoes and flowers, a trip to the beauty shop for hair, the rental of tuxedoes, and dinning either before or after the prom.
Men’s Warehouse is offering a $5 discount to those who rent a tuxedo from them for this year’s prom; the theme of which will be “Midnight in Paris.”
Students may still order a Robala yearbook, said McCrady.
“They will need to come by the library and pick up an order form, or they may go to the order center which has been reopened online at the RHS website,” she said. “The main thing to remember is that it’s not too late to place their order.”
