JOSEPHINE - Thirty-four canines traveled from Dothan to Daphne to compete at the second annual Cove Dog Olympics on Oct. 10.
Competitions at Pirate’s Cove Yacht Club in Josephine included water sprints, dock diving, small dog trick contest and the ever-popular burger eating contest.
Mike Healy, Cove Dog Olympics chairman, confirmed the judges and timekeepers scores then declared the winners.
First competition was for the “Canine Michael Phelps” in a timed water sprint down a 166 ft course. “Lucy” swam the fastest at 29.44 seconds; owners Karen and Butch Perdue of Josephine. Silver medal went to “Derby” in 32.34 seconds; owner Dr. Susan Wells of Lillian. “Hoss” got the Bronze medal for 34.44 seconds; owner Hillary Ducote of Daphne.
Dock Diving had three judges observing the form; dive ratings were from 0.0 (dog refuses to get wet) to 10.0 (dog does a back flip in mid air before catching stick/ball/other). New dock diving world record was set by “Quick” with 8.833; owner Wade Woverton of Josephine. Silver Medal went to the previous world record holder, “Josie” with 8.333; owner Christy Munsterman of Josephine. Bronze Medal was earned by “Hoss” with 7.0; owner Hillary Ducote of Daphne.
Final event was Cove Burger Eating Contest where Tiki, a 4-year old English Mastiff, retained her world record for downing an entire burger in 2.16 seconds. Her owner, Karl Mueller, said, “Tiki gets a lot of practice here at Pirate’s Cove.” Silver medal went to “Walker” in 9.78 seconds; he is a Walker Coon Hound BARC! has for adoption. Bronze medal went to “Josie” with 11.90 seconds; owner Christy Munsterman of Josephine.
Beverly Hicks, BARC! office manager, said, “We are pleased with the $863 raised through entry fees and donations. Plus it was fun!”
