For Parrotheads, Mobile's National Maritime Museum of the Gulf will be opening a new exhibit dedicated to the late coastal native and musical legend Jimmy Buffett.
On Saturday, Sept. 12, the museum will open the doors to "Jimmy Buffett: Son of a Son of a Sailor Experience," a permanent installation spanning 6,000 square feet covering the life, music and career of Buffett.
The exhibit will feature more than 130 artifacts from Buffett's life, many of which have never been shown to the public. Some of the artifacts that will be on display include:
"Creating the Jimmy Buffett Experience has been an absolute honor for our entire team. We have spent nearly two years listening, researching, collecting stories, curating artifacts and working to capture the remarkable life of a man who meant so much to so many people," Karen Poth, executive director of the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf, said in a statement. "We didn't get far into this project before we realized this exhibition will never be a finished story. It is a living exhibit and it will continue to change and grow as new stories are shared, new artifacts come to light, and we learn more about Jimmy and the world he created. Opening the doors on Sept. 12 is not the end of this journey; it is the beginning."
According to the museum, the celebration for the exhibit's opening will kick off with a "Margaritas and Memories" concert on Friday, Sept. 11, featuring Buffet collaborator Mac McAnally and Scotty Emerick at the Saenger Theatre. The grand opening of the exhibit will feature the unveiling of a bronze Jimmy Buffett sculpture near the museum on Saturday. Additional events will include live music and a nautical-inspired mural festival in Cooper Riverside Park.
