BON SECOUR – The public will have more access to Baldwin County waterways with the construction of a county boat launch and other facilities on the Bon Secour River expected to be completed in early 2022.

The Baldwin County Commission bought 18 acres on the south side on the river as part of their commitment to provide increased recreational opportunities and access to waterways, a county statement said.

Plans for the property include preservation of coastal wetlands, a boat launch, parking and additional parkland for trails and future recreational opportunities. The facility will allow residents and visitors to launch boats, kayaks, canoes or other watercraft into the river. The purchase also ensures the protection of many live oaks that provide shade and other benefits to the overall ecosystem, county officials said.

The property is located off George Street in Bon Secour. The commission bought the site for $2 million. Designing the facility and getting the needed permits for construction is expected to take eight months to a year. Construction will take up to five months.
