William Dewey Murray Sr., 90, a native of Phil Campbell, Ala., and resident of Fairhope, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007.

He received his undergraduate and master's degrees from the University of Alabama and his Ph.D. from the University of Utah, and completed postdoctoral studies at Harvard University and Texas A&M University.

He was a lifelong educator, devoting his career to a number of Southern Baptist colleges. He served as the dean of the education department of Howard College (now Samford University) and as the academic dean at Louisiana College and Judson College.

He was a veteran of World War II and he held the commission of Colonel in the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels. After retiring, he served as an educational consultant for Alice Lloyd College in Pippa Passes, Ky.

Survivors include his wife Geraldine Wall Murray; son William Dewey (Patti) Murray Jr.; grandchildren Holly Murray (Jonathan) Hooks, William Dewey (Tiffany) Murray III, Jackson Wheeler Murray, and great-grandson Jonathan Michael Hooks, Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home and Crematory, Fairhope, with the Rev. Dr. Jerry Henry officiating.

The family requests memorial donations be made to Caney Baptist Church, c/o Margo Sparkman, Treasurer, 100 Purpose Road, Pippa Passes, KY 41844.
