FOLEY, Ala. — A Foley man who told police his temper got the best of him when he shot and killed his wife on June 15, 2008, was found guilty of murder this week.
Baldwin County Circuit Court Judge Charles Partin will sentence David H. Mumford on June 11. Mumford was 67 when the shooting incident occurred.
Lt. David White, commander of Foley Police Department’s Criminal Investigative Division, said the jury deliberated about 45 minutes on Wednesday before returning the guilty verdict. The trial began on Monday.
Mumford was arrested after shooting to death his wife, Theresa Ann Welsh, 46, when he and a 12-year-old son returned from a fishing trip at Alabama Point. Marital issues were at the root of the shooting, Foley police said at the time. Welsh was planning on leaving Mumford. When Mumford arrived at the residence at 21322 U.S. Hwy. 98 that Sunday afternoon, Welsh attempted to lock him out and pepper sprayed him.
After kicking in the door, Mumford entered the house and shot Welsh several times as she fled. Mumford also got into a fight with his 14-year-son who was in the house at the time of the shooting. The 12-year-old remained outside the house when the shooting occurred.
