Movie theater proposed for city

The big screen may be coming to Spanish Fort soon — you can almost smell the popcorn.

A 41,000 square foot movie theater was proposed Tuesday at a Spanish Fort Planning Commission work session.

The commission reviewed site plans presented by the Eastern Shore Centre/CMH architects for Premiere Cinemas.

Building official Bruce Renkert said the theater will be approximately 41,880 square feet, have 2,625 seats and will feature 14 movie screens.

The movie theater will be located in the Eastern Shore Centre across from the Spanish Fort Police Department.

Site plans show the front entrance will face the Eastern Shore Centre complex, and parking will be in the rear of the building.

Planning Commission made several recommendations: The architects should reconsider a drop off zone for patrons, and the facility should be moved further back from the sidewalk.

The Commission requested that plans be resubmitted electronically before the next meeting.

Premiere Cinemas offers stadium seating, high-back rocking love-seats and DTS digital sound systems. According to the company’s Web site, Premiere Cinemas have also sponsored community, charity and fund-raising events regularly throughout the year in their other locations.
