Montgomery ethics hearing resumes Aug. 3 in Fairhope police chief case

FAIRHOPE, Ala. - Following a hearing in Montgomery next Wednesday, the Alabama Ethics Commission is expected to rule on an ethics complaint against Police Chief Bill Press, which was initiated by Mayor Tim Kant regarding the use of a private police bank account in the handling of off-duty officer employment.

The ethics agency will determine whether probable cause exists to refer the case to the local district attorney or the state attorney general for prosecution, according to Hugh Evans, the agency’s general counsel.

“The commission voted in open session to carry it over to the August meeting just to get a few unanswered questions resolved,” Evans said this week. “So it will be concluded Wednesday.”

The Aug. 3 hearing, at which Kant has been requested by the ethics agency to appear, is the continuation of a hearing that started June 1.
