ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — Got a lot of good-condition, good quality kids’ clothes? They are too nice to toss, but looking for an easier way to get rid of them other than the time-honored garage sale?

Looking for some nice clothes and accessories for your youngster, and maybe some toys, DVDs or videos that won’t require robbing Fort Knox?

The solution to both dilemmas might be found a few doors down from Greer’s Supermarket on Highway 59 in Robertsdale.

“Mommy and Me Marketplace” bills itself as an “upscale children’s and maternity consignment boutique.”

But it’s so much more.

“We will be doing birthday parties,” explained store owner Brandy Darden, heading to a tiled room that can have the racks of merchandise quickly removed. A nearby kitchen in the store will serve as a staging area for the party’s food, and parents can have their child’s party at the store (with plenty of help from Darden) without seeing their own homes get messy. Call 747-3890 for more information.

With Halloween a few weeks away, thrifty parents can find costumes for their little ghoul, goblin, or pincess at “Mommy and Me Marketplace.”

“Some of these costumes are from dance recitals,” said Darden. “They are pretty well-made and absolutely gorgeous.”

Darden also has a small room in the 3,800-square-foot store for dance wear, something that parents of students at nearby dance schools will appreciate.

There are racks and racks of regular clothes, dress clothes, and play clothes, from all seasons in sizes from “preemie to juniors and young men’s sizes,” said Darden.

Clothing brought to "Mommy and Me Marketplace" for consignment must be clean, free of rips or tears, unstained and have no missing buttons. Darden sets the prices, sorts the clothes and the seller and the store split the sale price on a 50-50 basis.

“They just have to drop off the items,” explained Darden, “everything in the store ranges from $1 to under $20.”

For full details and to check the store’s specials (last week, the store was running a “buy 3 get 1” free on select clothing, a “buy 1 get 1 free” on hats, and 10 percent off on maternity wear), tt’s best to go to the store’s Web site, mmmboutique.webs.com.

The result is a store that has a little of everything for a Mom or Dad who wants to see their child with the best and sometimes one-of-a-kind items.

“Mommy and Me Marketplace” carries a number of handmade items, including hair bows that Darden says, “are made by a local craftsperson.” The store also carries handmade jewelry, including jewelry to celebrate your (or your child’s) love of the Tide or Tigers, and “koozie” drink holders.

Darden ran a successful boutique in the Tanger Outlet Center in Foley on an occasional basis earlier this year.

“We needed more room, and I wanted to be open all the time,” said Darden. “There is a real need (for a consignment store) around here.”
