As part of the Mobile Symphony Orchestra Discovery Series, Mobile Symphony musicians Andra Bohnet and Katie Ott will perform a chamber music concert at the Eastern Shore Art Center in Fairhope on Sunday, Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. This is the second concert of the season in the MSO Discovery Series, which features Mobile Symphony musicians in chamber music concerts.
Bohnet, principal flutist for the Mobile Symphony, has been a featured soloist on several occasions. Her chamber ensemble for flute and strings, the Silverwood Quartet, has performed throughout the United States, for the National Flute Association and in Japan.
She also performs on Irish and other folk flutes with Mithril, a high energy Celtic-world music band. Mithril has released several CDs that have been featured on NPR’s syndicated show “Celtic Connections” and the band will perform at 5 p.m. Dec. 16th at Foley United Methodist Church.
Bohnet teaches flute, music literature and chamber music as professor of music at the University of South Alabama.
Katie Ott, principal harpist for the Mobile Symphony, has performed major works as a soloist, including Angel’s Harp by David Ott, Concerto for Flute and Harp by Mozart, and Sacred and Profane Dances by Debussy. Her playing has been described as having “a shimmering ethereal quality that demonstrates why she is so much in demand by orchestras along the Gulf Coast.”
In addition to the Mobile Symphony, Ott plays with the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra and The Philharmonic Orchestra of Northwest Florida.
She currently teaches harp at the University of West Florida and in her private harp studio while residing in Miramar Beach, Fla.
The final concert of the MSO Discovery Series will be Sunday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. and will feature the Archduke Trio: Enen Yu, violin; Guo Sheng Huang, cello; and Robert Holm, piano.
Tickets are $15 per performance. To purchase tickets, go to esaconline.com or call 251-928-2228, ext.106.
The Mobile Symphony, now presenting its 14th season, has gained prominence throughout the region with more than 250 concerts, world-class guest soloists such as Yo-Yo Ma and Itzhak Perlman and an education program that serves more than 7,000 students every year.
The 2012-2013 season is the 13th year for Music Director Scott Speck, who was appointed to the position in 2000. Beyond his work with the Mobile Symphony, Speck is in demand with orchestras around the world. His performances in London, Paris, Moscow, Beijing, Chicago, San Francisco and Washington have inspired international acclaim as a conductor of passion, intelligence and winning personality.
The Mobile Symphony performs in the beautifully restored, historic Saenger Theatre in downtown Mobile. From September through May, the Symphony is heard live by more than 40,000 people.
