Mobile Symphony set to perform ‘The Four Seasons’

MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile Symphony Orchestra (MSO) will perform one of the world’s most loved pieces of classical music, Antonio Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons,” on April 10, at 8 p.m., at the Saenger Theatre in Mobile. A Sunday matinee performance follows on April 11 at 2:30.

Instantly recognizable from countless movies, ads and television shows, “The Four Seasons” is clearly Vivaldi’s most famous work, and one of the most popular works of Baroque music. This set of four violin concertos uses different musical textures to evoke each season, including a crashing thunderstorm for summer — certainly a familiar sound for any Gulf Coast resident.

Daniel Szasz, concertmaster of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra since 1997, is featured violin soloist. He is active as a concert soloist, chamber musician, and recitalist.

A versatile musician, interested in performing both standard and less familiar repertoire, Szasz has been consistently praised for his “expressive, rich and warm sound” as well as for his “strong, confident, and assertive playing.”

Born in Romania in the Transylvanian city of Sibiu, Szasz began playing the violin at age 6 under the supervision of his father, a former principal trumpet player with the Sibiu State Philharmonic Orchestra.

At age 8, he played his first solo recital, and at 13 he performed his first concerto with a professional orchestra.

The evening concludes with Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for Strings,” one of the composer’s warmest, heartfelt creations.

Individual tickets are $15-$55, and can be purchased online at www.mobilesymphony.org, by phone at (251) 432-7080, or at the symphony box office, 257 Dauphin Street in Mobile.

Students, K-12, will be admitted free for Sunday matinee performances when accompanied by a paying adult through the Big Red Ticket program (limit two students per adult).

All concerts are held at the Saenger Theatre, 6 S. Joachim St. in downtown Mobile.
