Mobile Ballet to stage new 'Cinderella,' student shows and sold-out tea party fundraiser

Posted

A beloved fairy tale will take center stage across Mobile this March as Mobile Ballet presents a new production of “Cinderella,” along with student matinee performances and a sold-out fundraiser designed to support arts education.

The company will debut Artistic Director Katia Garza’s fresh interpretation of “Cinderella” at the Saenger Theatre, 6 S. Joachim St., bringing Sergei Prokofiev’s sweeping score to life with elaborate scenery, elegant choreography and a full cast of company dancers, guest professionals and student performers.

Performances are scheduled for Saturday, March 28, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 29, at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $25 to $69, with discounts available for children, students, seniors 65+ and military members. Group rates are offered for parties of 10 or more. Tickets are available at www.mobileballet.org/performances and are not sold through the Saenger box office.

In addition to the public performances, Mobile Ballet’s Discover Dance outreach program will present two special performances of “Cinderella” exclusively for K-12 field trips. The student matinees aim to introduce young audiences to live ballet and reinforce arts education in area schools.

The first student performance is set for Friday, March 20, at 10 a.m. at Coastal Alabama Community College in Bay Minette. The second will take place Friday, March 27, at 9:30 a.m. at the Saenger Theatre in Mobile. Student tickets are $5 and teachers attend free, though advance reservations are required. More information is available at www.mobileballet.org/performances/school-performances.

The month’s festivities begin with “Cinderella’s Tea Party,” a family-friendly fundraiser scheduled for Sunday, March 15, at 2 p.m. at the historic Bragg-Mitchell Mansion, 1906 Springhill Ave. The afternoon will feature a sneak peek of the upcoming ballet, a cast meet-and-greet, photo opportunities, storytime, treats, themed activities and a silent auction.

Tickets for the tea party were $45 per person and sold out quickly, organizers said. A waiting list is available and the community can still support the fundraiser through sponsorships and donations. Proceeds benefit Mobile Ballet’s educational programming and student scholarships, which help expand access to dance training and performances throughout the region.

Advance purchase is recommended for all performances and events. Additional details about the tea party can be found at www.mobileballet.org/cinderella-tea.
