Mobile Arts Council announces inaugural MobTown Mural Festival set for Sept. 12-13

The Mobile Arts Council will debut its inaugural MobTown Mural Festival on Sept. 12-13, a two-day public art event that will bring artists together to create large-scale murals across downtown Mobile.

The festival will allow the public to observe live mural painting on building walls and on three-dimensional 4’x4’ cubes placed throughout the downtown area, a news release said. Organizers said the event will activate walls, public spaces and unexpected locations with new works designed to leave a lasting visual impact while highlighting Mobile’s expanding creative scene.

As the city’s first large-scale mural festival, the event will showcase a curated group of artists chosen for their creativity, technical ability and skill in producing site-specific work that reflects Mobile’s culture, history and spirit. In addition to permanent wall installations, the festival will feature large movable murals positioned strategically across the downtown area.

Residents and visitors will be able to watch artists at work throughout the weekend, interact with muralists and experience downtown Mobile through a different artistic perspective.

"MobTown Mural Festival is an exciting milestone for Mobile's arts community," Executive Director of the Mobile Arts Council Angela Montgomery said in the release. "Public art has the power to bring people together, create a sense of place, and inspire civic pride. This festival will not only beautify our city but also create the opportunity for visitors and residents to experience live art in action."

The Mobile Arts Council said the festival reflects its ongoing effort to expand public art opportunities and increase access to the arts for all residents.

Additional information, including participating artists, mural sites and sponsors, will be released in the coming months. Businesses, organizations and individuals interested in sponsorship opportunities, providing wall space or volunteering are encouraged to contact the Mobile Arts Council. Updates will also be available through the Mobile Arts Council website and its social media channels.
