FORT MORGAN, Ala. — Authorities confirmed Monday afternoon the body of a Foley man has been recovered. It's believed he fell off a fishing pier in Fort Morgan and remained missing over the weekend.
The recovery was reported by Orange Beach Fire Department, whose rescue and recovery divers took part in the search effort.
According to the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department, officers responded to a report of two distressed swimmers, one still under water at the Fort Morgan Pier, at 11 p.m. Friday. The Coast Guard also responded on the scene.
“It is reported that three individuals was fishing off the pier when one of the men fell into the water,” said Sheriff’s Capt. Stephen K. Arthur in a news release. “One of his friends jumped into the water in an attempt to rescue his friend and the third subject attempted to throw a net to the men. “However, their efforts to find the first individual were unsuccessful.”
Authorities say friends and family identified the man as 26-year-old Hubert Baxter “BJ” Johnson. Arther said that when initial efforts to find him Johnson failed, Fort Morgan Fire, the Alabama State Troopers helicopter, the Coast Guard, Orange Beach Search and Rescue and Bon Secour Search and Rescue also responded and began an immediate search for him. However, inclement weather stopped the search after a few hours.
“The search was continued at daybreak (Saturday) when the weather cleared,” Arthur said.
