Miflin Road improvements to begin, aiming to boost safety and traffic flow

Posted

Construction is set to begin in the coming days on Miflin Road east of Alabama 59 as the City of Foley moves forward with a long-planned project to improve safety and traffic flow along one of the city’s busiest commercial corridors.

The project will add turn lanes, curbs and other enhancements on the roadway, also designated Baldwin County 20. Work is expected to last three to four months and is scheduled to be completed before the start of the summer tourist season, when traffic volumes typically increase.

City officials have spent several years preparing for the improvements following the adoption of a management plan for the route. About a year ago, Foley officials met with business owners along the corridor to review the proposed changes, discuss access issues and outline how construction would proceed. A recent preconstruction meeting focused on preparations for the first phase of work, which will take place between Alabama 59 and South Juniper Street.

Business owners along the route are now being notified that construction is about to begin. While the road is expected to remain open throughout the project, motorists should anticipate delays at times as some lanes may be closed during active work.

One of the most significant changes will be the removal of the existing asphalt median lane between Alabama 59 and Juniper Street. That median will be replaced with a landscaped grass median, new lighting and concrete curbing. The redesign is intended to streamline traffic movement and reduce conflict points where accidents have occurred as vehicles crossed the roadway.

After the improvements are complete, the road will include a mid-block u-turn located within 1,000 feet of Alabama 59, allowing vehicles to safely cross the street without making risky maneuvers.

City officials said the improvements are designed to enhance safety and support long-term mobility on Miflin Road and asked residents, business owners and motorists for patience and cooperation as construction moves forward.
