Members’ Juried Show opens Friday at Eastern Shore Art Center

FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The Eastern Shore Art Center’s First Friday ArtWalk, March 5, includes the Members’ Juried Show and the III. MIMIC, DIVISION, INITIATIVE exhibit.

The Members’ Juried Show highlights more than 100 works selected by this year’s judge, Dr. Robert J. Bantens.

Bantens received his Ph.D in art history from Pennsylvania State University. He retired as the associate professor of art history at the University of South Alabama, and served on the boards of Mobile Museum of Art, Spring Hill College Library, Joe Jefferson Players and Mobile Opera.

Bantens served as judge for the First Congressional District Art Competition, the 2010 Visual Arts Achievement Exhibit and Competition, 2000 ESAC Outdoor Art Show and the 2008 Pensacola Museum of Art Members’ Show.

Also on display is III. MIMIC, DIVISION, INITIATE, artwork by Corinna Ray, Katelyn Hancock and Merritt Milam. The three young women graduating in May from Birmingham Southern College offer very different themes and media.

Hancock explores Facebook, Twitter and other vehicles of digitalized social networking that offer a quick and convenient medium through which we exchange bites of our ideas, emotions and stories with one another.

Ray challenges an artist’s influential power to recognize truth and give the audience something to believe in through positive manipulation.

Milam uses multiple exposures, as opposed to single exposures, to represent life as it occurs or rather as it is remembered. When captured in a photographic light this “memory” takes on a surreal look that represents a moment with more accuracy than a traditional approach.

The Members’ Juried Show and III. MIMIC, DIVISION, INITIATE will be on exhibit through March 27, Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free.

The Eastern Shore Art Center is located at 401 Oak St. in Fairhope.
