Adelaide Dodd McDade, 90, a native of Mobile and a longtime resident of Fairhope, died Monday, Aug. 3, 2009.

She moved to Fairhope in the 1950s and joined the First Baptist Church, where she was a member for over 55 years.

Over the years she worked at the Baptist Children’s Home, where she taught music and penmanship, and Maddoc’s Foundation Home for Special Education Children. She also worked at the Alabama State Employment office. She owned Victory Gardens Nursery at her home in Fairhope from 1970 to 1984 and was an owner and employee of Tom Dodd Nursery, her family’s nursery in Semmes.

She played the piano at Higgins and Bayview Funeral Homes for over 40 years, as well as playing for many churches in Fairhope and Barnwell.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marilyn McDade Reed; son, Robert Milton McDade; brothers, Tom Dodd Jr., Steven Dodd, Joseph Dodd, Harold Dodd and Paul Dodd.

Survivors include a son, Steven L. Baker (Linda Chavis) of Fairhope; granddaughter, Conlee (Frank) Whiteley of New Orleans; two grandsons, Christopher Kelly Baker (Shelly Curry) of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Robert Carol McDade of Mobile; three brothers, William R. Dodd of Lillian, John (Norma) Dodd of Semmes and George Truett Dodd of Russia; great-grandchildren, Joshua Baker, Colen Baker, Lily Baker and Frank R. Whiteley IV; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4 at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home. Viewing begins at 9 a.m. with funeral services at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5 at the First Baptist Church of Fairhope. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens of Fairhope.
