William C. “Mack” “Junior” McCurdy, 88, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2009 at Harris Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, surrounded by his children.

He was born Sept. 28, 1920 to Jesse E. McCurdy and Ethel Faircloth McCurdy. At age 17, while working in a bakery in Pensacola, he injured his hand in a commercial dough mixer and was told he would never be able to work again.

Despite his injury, he went on to sell insurance and then became a top-notch floor covering mechanic, working for Jones Floor covering and, after moving to Texas, not only installing floor covering, but becoming an active representative in the Floor Covering Union.

He loved to fish and also to dance, particularly squre dancing and two stepping. He loved wearing his cowboy hat and boots and enjoyed his retirement in his motor home.

He married Marie Nix in 1943, which later ended in divorce. He then married Vermell Joyner Rushing in 1957, which also ended in divorce.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Pensacola.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, step-son, Gary Rushing, brother-in-law, Jerry Joyner, son, Joe McCurdy, daughter, Threasa Mello, brother, Harold E. McCurdy, sister, Mary Green, granddaughter, Elizabeth Mello, grandson, Lucas McCurdy, and second wife, Vermell.

Survivors include three sons, William C. (Rose) McCurdy III of Robertsdale, Jesse E. (Janice) McCurdy of Fairhope and Gregory Alan McCurdy of Richland Hills, Texas; daughter, Cindy Williams of Richland Hills; three step-daughters, Elaine (Wally) Penny of Arlington, Texas, Diane Torres of Mesquite, Texas, and Beverly Drake of Arlington; four sisters, Amanda Hall of Pensacola, Fla., Bernice (Harvey) O’Farrell of Pensacola, Fla., Naomi (Ralph) McCullers of Pensacola, and Evelyn “Becky” (Bob) Glassier of Yuma, Ariz; his first wife, Marie Rushing Jones of Elberta; son-in-law, All Mello of Wesley Chapel, Fla; 21 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 16 at Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington, Texas. A memorial service will also be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26 at the home of William and Rose McCurdy, 21985 Koier Road, Robertsdale.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Lucas McCurdy Memorial Fund, 21985 Koier Road, Robertsdale, AL 36567.

Cremation arrangements are by Mack Funeral Home & Crematory Inc., Robertsdale.
