MONTGOMERY, Ala.—The Spanish Fort Toros scored the only run they would need in the top of the first inning but tacked on five more for a 6-0 shutout over Cullman at Paterson Field Friday to win Game 1 of the 2014 5A championship series. Myles York drove in Will Luft for the first run which was all Toro starter Jesse McCord required.
The Mississippi State signee picked up his 12th win of the year with a four hit, 14 strike out, one-walk afternoon. Luft led at the plate with three hits and three RBIs while Hunter Stokes added two hits and two RBIs as the No. 1-ranked Toros scored once again in the third inning and added two in the fourth and sixth innings. SF (38-6) delivered 12 hits on offense and had no flaws in the field.
Bearcats starter Jesse Scott took the loss for Cullman after 5.2 innings. He gave up five earned runs and endured one error. Auston Neal had two hits for CHS (42-11).
Game 2 of the best-of-three series is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Riverwalk Stadium. Game 3, if necessary, is also set for Riverwalk at 1 p.m.
