Mattie Lucille Taylor Mayo died Wednesday, June 16, 2010 in Spanish Fort.
She was the daughter of Bonnie Parrish and Piney Bell Taylor. She was born Nov. 13, 1914 in Elba, the second of 10 children. For a while she was the only girl among three brothers, Royce Taylor, Ed Taylor and Elmer Taylor. She learned quickly that she needed to be a tomboy to survive.
She loved to read, so her favorite job on the farm was to churn the butter as she read her book. She finally got some sisters, six in all, Annie Laurie Wright, Olene Farrell, Frances Bannon, Cupidean (Frank) Clark, Jean (Ladell) Payne and Annette (Harold) Farris. She was the first girl to go off to the big city of Montgomery, find a job and make her way in the world.
With determination and common sense packed, she left home, moved to Montgomery, and there met her love, Lawrence. They had four children, Larry (Carol) Mayo, Patty Mayo Grant, Linda (Michael) Henderson, and Michael (Sylvia) Mayo; and five grandchildren, Marc (Laura) Mayo, Ashley (Jamie) Dougherty, Lindsay Grant, Daniel Grant, Joseph Henderson; and three great-grandchildren, Caroline, Brady and Skylar.
She loved Jesus and was a mighty prayer warrior. She will be missed by everyone who knew her or crossed paths with her. She made everyone feel special and loved.
Visitation begins at 10 a.m. with a celebration of the life service at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 26 at Spanish Fort United Methodist Church.
The family requests memorial donations be made to Prodisee Pantry, 6530 Spanish Fort Blvd. Suite D, Spanish Fort, AL 36527.
