"MasterChef Junior" competitors Starla Chapman of Bay Minette, A' Dan Lisaula are enjoying the experience

Gulf Coast Media caught up with Starla Chapman April 14 at Pearl and Addie's Café in Bay Minette. Family and friends gathered to watch "MasterChef Junior" episode five and meet special guest and fellow competitor A' Dan Lisaula. They each spent some time speaking with us about their experience so far and what it has been like to watch the episodes.

When we first spoke with Chapman in early March, she spoke about being nervous and excited for her peers to watch the show. The series is now five episodes in, and she is enjoying the experience more than she anticipated.

"It's fun a lot of the time. I hear people whispering sometimes, not in a rude way, asking if I am the girl that was on the show. They will come up and ask what the show is called. Some people come up and say they need a best friend that can cook and ask if I will be their best friend," Chapman said with a laugh. "It is stuff like that all the time, almost every day."

Lisaula's peers and teachers were shocked to learn of his culinary talent.

"I never told anyone I can cook, not even my teachers and once they saw me on television they were like 'You can cook? You are on a television show?' They knew me for so long and never knew that side of me because I never told anyone," Lisaula said.

Chapman and Lisaula were both 10 when "MasterChef Junior" season eight was filmed and they have both grown a lot over that time.

"It is weird seeing myself on television because it was three years ago and that was a different person," Chapman said.

Lisaula added, "I feel like I was a good cook back then, but I feel like my skills have elevated along with my maturity, knife skills and seasoning skills."

Chapman and Lisaula became fast friends during the taping of the show and have continued that friendship over the past three years. According to the pair, all 16 competitors have stayed in touch and talk often.

"It is amazing to know that all 16 of us were friends from day one. It is insane to know that Starla only lives four hours away from me," Lisaula said. "I text Starla privately but there is an Instagram group chat that is everyone and we Facetime, text and call sometimes. It has been that way since the show, and we like to keep in touch with each other."

As for the future, these teens have plans and goals. Chapman has a few upcoming projects that include a partnership with a local business and summer cooking classes. The Chef Starla Cooking Classes will take place at Java J's Café in June. Children will have the chance to spend 90 minutes learning to cook pizza grilled cheese. More information can be found on the Team Starla Facebook page.

"I am so excited for the cooking camps," Chapman continued. "In Bay Minette, there is a drink shop called Coastal Bay Nutrition and I just came out with a drink. It is called Cup for a Cure and it is made up of peach, pina colada and prickly pear. The proceeds go to the Cook Up a Cure Foundation," Chapman said.

When asked about his future, Lisaula said, "Some of my future plans are to keep cooking and teaching my little brother to cook. If you don't know how to cook, you are starving. And it is the quickest way to a girl's heart."

Watch Bay Minette's Chapman and Lisaula on "MasterChef Junior" season eight each Thursday on FOX at 7 p.m. CST.
