GULF SHORES, Alabama – Quarterback Parker Mason accounted for four touchdowns and the Gulf Shores Dolphins rolled to a 40-6 win over the Satsuma Gators in the season opener at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium on Friday.
Mason carried six times for 85 yards and three touchdowns and completed 5-of-7 passes for 90 yards with a touchdown in the win for Gulf Shores (1-0).
“He ran the ball really well and threw it well,” Gulf Shores head coach Ben Blackmon said. “He really came into his own. He is a leader on our team. The kids love him and buy into him on the field. He had a heck of a game, I’m proud of him.”
Gulf Shores scored on its first possession after driving 70 yards with Mason’s 21-yard touchdown run capping the drive at the 4:58 mark. Satsuma answered with its only touchdown coming on a 12-yard scamper from Darryl Davis less than two minutes later. Mason’s second touchdown, a 23-yard run, came on the Dolphins’ next possession.
Mason hit Doug Olney twice on the Dolphins’ first possession of the second half, including a 41-yard touchdown strike to put Gulf Shores up 20-6. Mason carried for a 16-yard touchdown later in the third quarter to give Gulf Shores a 26-6 lead.
The Dolphins had 362 yards of total offense, but were penalized 14 times for 115 yards. Blackmon attributed some of the sloppy play to his team not being able to practice on Monday and Tuesday because of Hurricane Isaac. Baldwin schools were closed through Wednesday and the county’s athletic teams were not allowed to practice until Wednesday afternoon.
“We missed Monday and Tuesday’s practice and that’s a big deal in a high school kids’ life,” Blackmon said. “When you have to take four days off, that’s huge for those kids. I was proud of the way they fought and showed up in the second half. We spent the first half trying to figure out what they were doing because we had not gotten to practice it much. They lined up in some formations that gave us some problems in the first half.”
Second-string quarterback Nathan Harris led two touchdown drives in the fourth quarter. Connor Martin scored a 4-yard touchdown run at the 8:39 mark, then Harris connected with Zac McConnell for a 23-yard touchdown to close out the game’s scoring.
Gulf Shores travels to Mobile to face Faith Academy in a Class 5A, Region 1 game next Friday.
