Mary’s Shelter Gulf Coast is marking 20 years of providing a safe home and support services for homeless pregnant women who choose life for their unborn children.
Friends of Mary’s Shelter Gulf Coast recently celebrated the anniversary with Chairman of the Board Fr. David Carucci, Executive Director Kay Trattles and Archdiocese of Mobile Archbishop Mark Rivitusi among those recognizing the milestone.
Since opening in 2006, Mary’s Shelter has provided housing for dozens of mothers, their newborn babies and older children. The 24-hour facility offers residents a safe place to live along with counseling and guidance to help them establish goals and plan for their futures.
The organization is preparing to expand its services through a new transitional housing program expected to begin soon. The initiative will include the construction of three homes where mothers and their children can live after leaving the shelter. The long-term goal is to help families gain the stability and resources needed to eventually purchase homes of their own.
Volunteers play an important role in the shelter's daily operations and resident support. Opportunities include providing transportation to medical appointments, jobs and educational classes that can lead to better employment opportunities. Volunteers also assist with babysitting and maintaining the facility.
Additional volunteer opportunities are available at the Gulf Coast Thrift Store in Elberta.
