Martha Jane Varley Wiese, 91, passed away peacefully at her home in Fairhope Sept. 18, 2014.
Known to her friends as Marty, she was the devoted wife of Peter V. Wiese, deceased; and the mother of two sons, Peter Varley Wiese, deceased, and William V. Wiese; and a grandson, Po Varley Wiese, both of Auburn.
Marty was born in San Francisco, but spent most of her childhood in Chicago and New York.
After graduating from high school where she was voted most beautiful in her senior class, Marty attended the prestigious Catherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City. Upon graduation she worked as the administrative assistant to the head of Scovill Brass Works, the company making all of the uniform buttons and ammunition casings for the American forces in World War II.
In 1944 she married Peter Wiese, a Marine Corps lieutenant. Pete was the love of her life, and they remained a devoted couple until his passing 60 years later.
Marty lived most of her adult life in Alabama, first in Montgomery and Birmingham, then spending the last 20 years happily in Fairhope.
Marty was a wonderful knitter and during her years in Montgomery, she was the knitting teacher at the old Montgomery Fair department store as well as an antique dealer.
Marty was a strong, naturally happy and cheerful person who overcame personal tragedy with grace and dignity.
She was constantly busy knitting, reading, decorating and caring for her much-loved dogs.
She was a patron of the Baldwin County Humane Society, Thomas Hospital Auxiliary and the Fairhope Elementary K-3 program.
She lived a very full life, and was happy and comfortable in her home until her passing.
She will be truly missed by her son, grandson and circle of close friends, especially Carolyn Dolan, JoAnn McDonald and Barry Cayson, who did so much to keep her last years fun and interesting.
As per her wishes, she will be cremated and her ashes scattered with those of her husband so once again they will be together. She specifically stated that she wanted no memorial service or funeral of any kind.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Baldwin County Humane Society would be lovely.
Arrangements by Mack Funeral Home, Robertsdale.
