DAPHNE, Ala. — The fight for Il Primo Premio (first place) is on for the third annual Mama Mia Cook-Off Saturday.
About 20 teams are expected to compete in the event organized by Supporting Educational Enrichment in Daphne’s Schools, SEEDS Communications Coordinator Denise D’Oliveira said.
The cook-off will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. in the parking lot of Hutchinson, Moore & Rauch, 2039 Main St.
“It’s designed to be a celebration of Daphne’s Italian heritage,” D’Oliveira said.
“When the foundation was becoming established, we wanted to create community events that would raise awareness and bring the community together,” she added.
“There are folks from every corner of the community that get together,” D’Oliveira said of the event.
The evening includes two divisions of teams: corporate and non-profits/families.
Each team can have up to six people on it, D’Oliveira said.
Within each division a team can compete in one of four categories:
• Carne (meat)
• Pollo (chicken)
• Sensa carne (meatless)
• Frutti di Mare (seafood)
Judges will award first and second place in each category and then there is an overall honor for showmanship — the Mama Mia Award.
The “Pasta Razzis” from the Daphne East Elementary School PTA won the Mama Mia Award last year, according to D’Oliveira.
“It’s the award for the team that goes the extra mile to make their participation memorable for the event,” D’Oliveira said.
A wine-tasting event will be held during the cook-off and SEEDS will sell Italian desserts a la carte this year, according to D’Oliveira.
The event will include an auction, entertainment by Randy Davis and the Jubilee Orchestra and a big-screen television for college football games, according to D’Oliveira.
Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the gate. For more information call 656-7333.
