Foley — The Magnolia Springs Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday to not support House Resolution 56.
The resolution states that 80 percent of fines levied in the federal government’s Clean Water Act be dedicated to the states impacted by the British Petroleum oil spill for environmental restoration. The federal act implements a fine against an entity that illegally discharges substance into a federal water body, and those fines go to the federal treasury. However, the house resolution asks for a majority of the funds accumulated from the act to be given to the states along the Gulf of Mexico for environmental restoration.
Magnolia Springs Mayor Charles Houser said he has some questions about the bill and which states will receive the funds, and he said Alabama Congressman Jo Bonner agrees.
"80 percent of the funds affected will go to environmental issues," Houser said. "Louisiana will get 80 percent of the money because they have by far the most environmental issues."
Houser said the only Baldwin County municipality to approve support for the resolution is Daphne.
