MAGNOLIA SPRINGS — Magnolia Springs resident David Lawrence wants to be able to walk around safely in the town without the threat of being hit by a speeding vehicle. To illustrate his point, he wore a reflective safety vest to Tuesday’s Town Council meeting.

“We have looked at it,” Magnolia Springs Mayor Ken Underwood told Lawrence. “We have applied for grants and haven’t gotten them. So nothing’s been done.”

Lawrence referenced Deepwater Horizon funding used for such projects as the improvement to Magnolia Landing.

“What about us?” he asked, adding that water access wasn’t his concern. “All I have a problem with is access to the town.

Members of the Council did point out that plans are under way to reduce speed on County roads 26 and 49. Those plans include working with the county to possibly add speed-reducing striping and a caution light. In addition, the Council discussed seeking funding to provide sidewalks that would flank the bridge that leads to Jesse’s Restaurant and the Community Hall, making it safer for pedestrians.

Also Tuesday, the Magnolia Springs Town Council:

  • Placed the request to vacate Palm Street on its May meeting agenda.
  • Approved a resolution for the town to participate in the Back to School Sales Tax Holiday, which is the first weekend in August.
