MAGNOLIA SPRINGS — It’s once again time for running enthusiasts to take to the pavement as the South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce presents the 10th annual Magnolia Run on Saturday.
The USATF Certified 5-KALO17JD event is set to take place outside Jesse’s Restaurant in Magnolia Springs with the route taking participants down Oak Street.
“Participants enjoy the scenic views of historic homes, blooming azaleas and towering live oaks while racing down Oak Street in Magnolia Springs,” Chamber Marketing and Events Manager Kristin Roberson said.
The 5K Run and 5K Run/Walk begins with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Then a one-mile Kids Fun Run follows at 9 a.m. se’s Restaurant.
While pre-registration has been under way, onsite registration will be held 6:30 a.m.-7:30 a.m. at Jesse’s Restaurant. Limited shirt sizes will be available onsite.
Following the races, awards will be presented to a variety of age groups. In addition, activities will include live music, food provided by Jesse’s Restaurant, beverages and a variety of door prizes. The grand prize is a two-night stay in a Gulf Front condo donated by Kaiser Realty.
Presenting sponsor for the 5K Race and 5K Race/Walk is South Baldwin Regional Medical Center. The Kid’s one-mile Fun Run is sponsored by Sam’s Club.
In its 10th year, the event serves as a fundraiser for education.
“A portion of the proceeds from the run go towards the Hattie Little Smith Scholarship, a South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce scholarship managed by the South Baldwin Education Foundation and awarded annually to a graduating Foley High School senior,” Roberson said. “One student is selected to receive the $500 scholarship based on their academic standing. In addition, the stude”nt must be actively engaged in a variety of community based activities and working toward moving the South Baldwin community they represent forward.”
Last year’s Magnolia Run attracted more than 315 participants to Magnolia Springs, some coming from North Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.
“We expect to exceed the number of racers from 2012,” Roberson said.
It looks like that could be the case, as she reported that more than 170 participants have pre-registered.
