After 38 years of feeding the community, Burris Farm Market has shut its doors.

At approximately 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, the iconic Baldwin County business posted the following statement to its Facebook page:

“The Burris family has been farming and running our business here since 1986. It has been a pleasure to service the local community for all these years. But it is time to move on. So, we are not opening up this year.

“We have enjoyed farming and providing fresh local fruits and vegetables for all these years. Also, need to thank the customers that have shopped and supported us all these years.

“But most importantly, we would like to thank our employees.”

Burris Farm Market has been growing and selling local produce to generations of residents and tourists. The market also housed a bakery that turned out pies, bread and cobbler.

The community responded rapidly to the announcement. Within two hours the post had 262 comments and had been shared 396 times. The comments ranged from shock at the closure to sadness and well-wishes from all over.

“We are from Katy/Houston, Texas. We have been stopping by since the early 2000s. We love your strawberry cheesecake. My kids love stopping and picking up a snack and produce. Hate to see you guys close. Great memories passing through,” said Eddie and Kim Rodriguez.

“We love your market and have been making a stop there once or twice per year on the way to the beach for as long as I can remember. Thank you from Baton Rouge,” said Helene Wall.

“Thank you for all you have done and provided for the community. I think it’s safe to say that Burris Farm Market and the Burris family will be missed greatly. So much love and respect,” said Hon Nguyen Beck.

While the market has closed, the post mentioned that they still have peaches that should be harvested in May. Keep an eye out for the Burris family to announce when their peaches are ready.
