Loxley yard sale to raise money for breast cancer walk participants

LOXLEY, Ala. — In 1980 at the age of 36, Susan Goodman Komen lost her battle against breast cancer.

In 1982 as a promise to her sister, Nancy G. Brinker continued the war against the disease, establishing the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which later became the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Today, nearly 30 years later, the war rages on while the organization claims to be the “global leader of the breasts cancer movement,” with more than 100,000 volunteers and activists having invested nearly $2 billion for breast cancer research.

Every year, events such as the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure in Dallas, the Susan G. Komen Marathon for the Cure, the Susan G. Komen Passionately Pink for the Cure and the Susan G. Komen Bowling for the Cure are held.

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure events are also held in nearly every state across America, mostly in October, which is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Loxley residents Christina Vaughn and Rachel Frolik have also seen their share of struggles with the disease.

“We both knew two ladies that struggled with breast cancer and both passed away this past year,” Frolik said. “Through helping raise money for them, it really opened our eyes and we were looking for a way to help out.”

Vaughn and Frolik are looking to organize a team to participate in this year’s Race for a Cure in Birmingham, which is scheduled for Oct. 15, but in order to participate as a team they have to make a donation to the organization.

“Our goal is to raise $1,200 and we’re just trying to get as close to that goal as we can,” Frolik said.

Friday and Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. they will host a yard sale at the Loxley Volunteer Fire Department. The yard sale will offer a wide range of items, Frolik said, from all sizes of clothes, to sports equipment, paintings, furniture and toys.

For more information about the event, you can contact Vaughn at 251-232-4787, or Frolik at 251-747-7477.
