LOXLEY, Ala. — Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington, D.C. in 1963 and urged everyone to come together for one common goal.
And every year people around the country celebrate his legacy through marches, parades and gatherings and schoolchildren lean about him and other famous black Americans through Black History Month.
This year will mark the 43rd anniversary of that speech and one group in Loxley is marking the occasion with a March and a program.
Carla Davis, coordinator of the event, said they will begin at 9 a.m. from Loxley Church of God on Highway 59 and travel to the Loxley Civic Center where they will have singing from the Ebenezer church, poetry reading and a speaker, Dr. Latitia McCain, Dean of Instructional Services at Bishop State Community College in Mobile. There will also be a lunch of hot dogs and hamburgers after the program.
“This is our sixth year and we are hoping for a good turnout and a blessed nice day for marching. We had about 150-200 last year and invite anyone who wants to come join us,” Davis said.
Although most of the marchers come from the Loxley area, Davis said some come from Daphne and Fairhope and anyone from the county can participate.
Gloria Autry is the chairwoman of the march committee and Ronnie McBride is the co-chairman, Davis said, and if more information is needed, she can be contacted at (251) 463-0222.
