LOXLEY, Ala. — Loxley police captured a rape suspect early Sunday morning, June 14. Charles Edward Raines, 31, was arrested on charges of first-degree rape, first-degree burglary, and assault in the third degree.

According to a release from Loxley Chief of Police John Cason, Loxley Police received a 911 call at 3:37 a.m., Sunday regarding a break-in and rape.

According to Cason, the residence was entered by removing a window air conditioning unit. According to the victim, her attacker wore a covering over his head and had a knife.

Officers on the scene were able to learn that the attacker left on a bicycle heading east. The Department of Corrections sent tracking dogs to the scene, and tracked the suspect to about a mile to a trailer off Spring Road North. This is in Stapleton, an area where Loxley police have jurisdiction.

Officers, Cason said, noted bicycle tracks matching the tread found at the crime scene in the front yard of the residence.

Raines was contacted and cooperated with police. The residence was searched, and clothing matching articles the victim had described were found.

Raines began confessing to the crime. He was arrested and taken to the Loxley Police Department for more questioning. He confessed to the crime, and Cason says he said he was sorry and needed help.
