MOBILE, Ala. — The Mobile Cross Country Challenge of Champions at Langan Park fielded 80 teams from Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi Saturday with girls and boys teams featured in Open and Invitational divisions.
Races were also held for freshman and middle school runners Friday in what meet director Steve Schonewald said was one of the largest fields ever in the history of the prestigious event.
Baldwin County teams ran well with a number of individuals finishing in the top medal groups. In the Open Boys race, Daphne took second with 77 points behind winner Brother Martin's, La., 39. Fairhope's Pirates took an eighth while Baldwin County High and Spanish Fort finished in the top 15. DHS freshman John Walker was second overall with a time of 18 minutes, 26.74 seconds followed by teammate Alex Guillory in fourth. The Pirates were led in the open by Caleb Casolaro, BCHS by Cody Parker and Spanish Fort by Edgars Johannsen.
In the Girls Open race, Daphne freshman Kaleigh Akers was the top Baldwin runner in 13th (24:08.56) followed by Anna Grace Claunch of Fairhope at 15th which led to a tight team finish with Fairhope edging Daphne for seventh place by a score of 66-78. Pensacola Catholic was the open team winner with a 54 ahead of Walker High's 66. A young BCHS Lady Tiger team led by Teresa Franke, Catie Bowman and Payton Redmon finished 12th in the girls open.
In the invitational, Carmen Carlos led the McGill-Toolen Yellow Jackets to a team winning 49 and the individual title again with an 18:20.63. But teammate and Baldwin resident by way of Montrose, Sage Blackwell was fourth overall at 19:45.86 and helped keep Mc-T ahead of UMS-Wright's second-place.
Spanish Fort ran the only invite team from Baldwin and scored a respectable eighth-place - 187 with a very young, middle-school scoring, team. The Lady Toros were led by Jordan Huber's 22:44.23 who finished with 2010 Baldwin County champion Hannah Evans of Fairhope on her heels.
The Invitational boys race was won by Brother Martin with 110 followed closely by Baker at 116. Fairhope finished fifth at 150 in a 17-team field and was led by Jordan Moore in 13th overall at 16:55.44 and Thomas Grace in 17:11.75.
