Locals junior golfers do well, former locals win championships at TimberCreek

DAPHNE, Ala.—Local Junior golfers had strong finishes in the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour’s sixth Major Championship at Timber Creek Saturday and Sunday.

Former Fairhopers Cynthia Navis and her brother Ray Navis won their divisions while other Eastern Shore and Mobile area players made the award ceremonies. The Navis’ now hail from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. Cynthia is a junior and Ray is an eighth grader.

Cynthia won the girls 15-18 division with an opening round of 76 then shot an even 72 for a final score of 148. Her back nine play helped ensure the title shooting with consistency for three birdies and 27 pars. She also had the best performance on par-4 holes with a 4.0 scoring average and par-5’s with a 5.2 scoring average.

Ray Navis also took it took another level in the second round to claim the boys 11-14 division crown.  He finished the first day tied with Will McFadden of Mobile, but finished with eight birdies for the victory. It was his sixth championship win this season.  Navis also won the EFX

Birdies Challenge with 10 total birdies for the tournament. He also had 20 pars and a field best performance on par 4 holes with a 3.8 scoring average. He also tallied a 3-hole streak of three birdies.

McFadden shot rounds of 74 and 78 to finish 12 shots back. He posted an eagle, three birdies, and 22 pars with a 4.2 scoring average on par 4 holes.

Finishing in a tie for third was Bryce Roush of Fairhope and Chris Hughes f, Vestavia. Each shot rounds of 78 and 77. Hughes had a field best 23 pars and an eagle while Roush added 4 birdies to his scorecard.

EFX Birdies Challenge Winners (# of birdies), Boys 15-18- Christian Bosso (9), Girls 15-18- Madison Sanders (5), Boys 11-14- Ray Navis (10), Girls11-14- Julie Baker (4).

Golf Pride Comeback Player of the Week, Boys 15-18- Daniel Kemp (13), Girls 15-18- Katelyn Gilmore (8), Boys 11-14- Jeremy Collins (15) and Girls 11-14- Julie Baker (11).

Tournament Yardages were set for Boys 15-18: 6856 yards, Girls 15-18: 5600 yards, Boys 11-14: 6203 yards and Girls 11-14: 5125 yards.
