LOXLEY, Alabama — Junior golfers from around the world and locally got in two rounds of highly competitive play Tuesday and Wednesday in the AJGA Junior presented by AT&T at Steelwood Country Club in Loxley.

The 54-hole stroke play competition for ages 12-18 was set to conclude Thursday after GCN’s print deadline. Local players Colby Carr, Alex Green and Virginia Green of Fairhope and Rebecca Todd of Daphne are representing Baldwin County this year.

After her second 18-hole round Taylor Coleman of San Antonio continued to lead the girls division with a 9-under par total. Coleman fired a 7-under 65 Tuesday and followed with a 2-under 70 Wednesday.

Bennett Baker of Tallahassee, Fla., finished the second day with a 7-under-par 65 from the boys tees to take the lead from Vasili Kartos of Birmingham, Ala., who led the Boys Division with a first-day 5-under-par 67.

Fairhope’s Virginia Green put together a 2-under 70 on her first round but slipped Wednesday from fourth to seventh with a 78 to take a 4-over par 148 into the final round.

An incoming freshman at Fairhope, Green is the reigning 6A state and Baldwin County champion. Todd, a Bayside Academy incoming senior, struggled in her first major international AJGA tournament with a 97 Tuesday, but shaved six strokes off in round two. Todd led the Lady Admirals to the 1A-5A State tournament this year and finished 15th individually in the state.

In the boys division Carr shot an 81 and an 83 while former state champion Alex Green struggled to take rounds of 89 and 97.

Sheldon Statkewicz of Mobile, a McGill-Toolen Catholic 2013 graduate, leads the local boys in a tie for 18th with rounds of 70 and 74 for an even 144 before the final 18. Incoming UMS-Wright senior Channing Flowers is four strokes over with scores of 75, 73 for a 148.

Last year Alex Green shot rounds of 77-70-73 for a 220 total and tied for eighth in the AJGA boys division. Green will be a junior at Fairhope High this fall.
