Local Toys for Tots campaign a success

The Marine Corps League Jesse Andrews Jr. Detachment serving the Eastern Shore, central and northern Baldwin County had another great year thanks to the kindness of the Baldwin County residents and businesses. The Marine Corps League was able to provide toys to over 1,400 children in Baldwin County who otherwise may not have had any toys under the tree.

“The detachment would like to thank the many individuals, businesses and organizations who have contributed” said Kenya Thomas, member of the Marine Corps League and Toys for Tots Coordinator.

According to Thomas, one of the businesses, Beef O’Brady’s in Spanish Fort is an excellent example. They host an annual event and collect many toys including some bicycles.

Many other organizations and businesses host events where new unwrapped toys are collected. The Marine Corps League assists with these events, collects the toys, sorts them and distributes them to be sure they get in the hands of the children who need them.

The Toys for Tots Foundation was founded by the Marine Corps Reserve in the 1940s and has grown every year since then. In places where there is no Marine Reserve unit, the Marine Corps League takes over. The Marine Corps League is primarily made up of individuals who have honorably served in the US Marine Corps. The Marine Corps League follows it motto of Marines Helping Marines but also strives to contribute and be good members of their community.

“We thank all those who contributed,” Thomas said. “Just think of the smiles and joy of these 1,400 children who may not have had a joyful Christmas morning without it. Job well done, Baldwin County!”

Many hours go into the Toys for Tots Program. Thomas and assistant coordinator Herb Cole each worked hundreds of hours to make this work. Other members of the Marine Corps League contributed many, many hours. Like the Detachment Commandant said, “OORAH.” It’s hard and long work but very rewording.

The Jesse Andrews Jr. Detachment of the Marine Corps League may be losing their storage facility where the toys are kept, inspected, sorted and distributed. They are searching for a space of about 3,000 feet or larger. If anyone knows of an available space in the area of the Eastern Shore, please let them know. You can email them at Marine@jcsee.com Anyone who served honorably in the Marine Corps is welcome to email us for more information about our organization.
