FAIRHOPE, Ala. - A workshop on invasive plants will be offered Tuesday, May 31, at the Weeks Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve south of Fairhope.
“A short, easy-walking field trip will provide a clear site assessment, including hands-on, direct examination of many of the worst invasive exotics in South Alabama homes, parks, and landscapes,” a workshop news release stated.
Attendees of the workshop, which is directed to homeowners, gardeners and landscapers, will learn how to identify, control, and avoid invasive exotic plant infestations in urban, suburban, and landscaped settings.
Workshop sessions will also explain various herbicides and equipment that is appropriate for small areas, and “the best available books and other reference materials will be provided,” the release stated.
The instructors for the daylong workshop include Gena Todia and noted local field biologist and author Fred Nation.
The Weeks Bay Reserve Invasive Exotics Workshop will be from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, and will take place at the Weeks Bay Reserve facility about 10 miles south of Fairhope on U.S. 98.
The $30 registration fee includes lunch, books and other reference materials. For more information, a detailed agenda, and to register, call Michael Shelton at Weeks Bay Reserve at (251) 928-9792.
